MACE 2009
High Point, NC
November 6-8, 2009

What is MACE?

Mid-Atlantic Convention Expo, (MACE) is the largest gaming convention in the Carolinas. Originally called ROC 96.5, MACE was created after the parent convention ROC of Ages went out of business. It started in High Point and has been held there ever since. But, MACE was not just an idea by Jeff, it developed into the con that it is, by loyal gamers who are still playing at the con today. In 2006, we celebrated our 10th anniversary, proudly bringing the best gaming the Carolinas has to offer in one place.

What is JustUs Productions?

JustUs Productions, the business organization behind MACE and mini-mace, is a company born of a love of a hobby. It is a business owned by Jeff and Karen Smith.

What is mini-mace?

mini-mace (yes, all lower-case), is a small game day event we host at least once a year that we like to hold in an eating establishment that usually serves a buffet. Our goal is to supply the two things gamers like the most - good gaming and good food.

IRON MACE GAME CHEF 2007

Overview: Create a playable game within one single week, using the limitations given!

RULES

Participation:

Only registered participants are eligible. Registration for this event is now closed.

If you believe that you won't be able to complete the contest once registered (or suddenly are unable to attend MACE), please send a quick courtesy email to storygames @ gmail . com so that we cam make sure you are accounted for.

Entries:

You'll be designing a complete game from scratch. The game can be as long or as short as required. It must be a new design, you can't use material that you have written before. The game must be submitted at MACE. You must submit four hardcopies, one for each judge to review.

Deadline and Submission:

The deadline for the contest is Friday, November 16th at 8:00PM. You will submit your entry at the check-in counter for MACE.

Judging:

There will be a panel of four judges who will score the work on a few categories:

1) Does it look playable?
2) Does it look fun/awesome (swing vote)?
3) DId it follow the restrictions of the contest?

The Object:

You need to design a complete playable game. In previous years, the contest focused on Role-Playing Games. This year, ANY kind of game is acceptable! RPG is standard, but a board game, card game and the like are fine (when submitting, make sure that each of the four physical copies has the material needed to evaluate and play the game).

Again, the game can be written as long or as short needed, but make
sure you clearly explain the rules for play.

The Constraints:

CONSTRAINT ONE: THE RULES

You must choose two of the following rules constraints in your game:

1) The game must make use of (either actually or metaphorically) the classic Tarot deck.

2) The game must be scalable/playable from three people up to fifteen people.

3) The game must have some sort of internet or online component.

4) You must write sentences as part of the game.

5) The game must use no randomizers like dice or playing cards.

CONSTRAINT TWO: THE THEME

Your game must include two of the following themes somewhere in your game. The greater the prominence/importance of the theme word, the higher the game will score:

1) Korea

2) Highway

3) Axe

4) Ceramic

5) River

With the above in mind, go forth and design your game! Protip: Feel free to choose the ones that inspire you. It may take some time, perhaps even a few days for inspiration to strike!

When Submitting:

Remember to print/make 4 copies of the game. Please have your first page of the rules be a "cover letter" including the following in each of the copies:

Your Name

The Title of your Game

The Constraints that you Chose, and

A quick 1-2 Sentence blurb explaining the game. Imagine it was the "back of the box" or "the back cover blurb of a book".

Good luck! If you have any questions, please email Andy at storygames @ gmail . com.
