At MACE (and most other cons), we have two distict areas of gaming.
One is the MMRPG (massive multiplayer RPG for the tabletop, not to be confused with MMORPGs on the computer) or the RPGA area. These are organized play style games. Most of these games are basically D&D campaign settings (Living Greyhawk, Living Death, Living City). You will hear them called Living campaigns or MMRPGs or networked games... all the same. The player bring his own qualified D&D character, plays in the adventures (or mods), gets experience, moves on to the next event. LG (Living Greyhawk) is just one of those campaign settings and not all are D&D. There is also L5R, Spycraft, Shadowrun as well as new games like Witch Hunter: Dark Providence. Most people, however, tend to lump them all together and call them the RPGA for simplicity-sake.
A BI is a Battle Interactive, a special event held within the parameters of Living Greyhawk play that only plays at conventions. This is a very large RPGA event.
A premiere is a first-time run of a particular adventure. Just like TV shows, adventures can play as a "rerun" at a convention - but if you've played the adventure before, you cannot play it again. Such adventures are generally offered for players who missed them the first time - at the premiere.
DAB is another MMRPG based on Dave Arneson's Blackmoor campaign - another D&D setting.
Other MMRPG/RPGA events include -
- LA - Living Arcanus (Arcanus D&D Setting)
- LD - Living Death (gothic horror D&D i,.e. Ravenloft)
- LF - Living Force (Star Wars d20, no longer run by the RPGA)
- SRM - Shadowrun Mission
- HoR - Heroes of Rokugan (L5R)
Yes.
The other area of gaming at cons is General Gaming. It is also called independent gaming or non-RPGA gaming. These game events have nothing to do with the RPGA or any MMRPG.
RPGs in General Gaming are one shot adventures with pre-generaeted characters, using any and every game system that people are willing to run. Usually, these games are given a 4 hour time slot to run their adventure.
In Genera Gaming, there are also board games, casrd games, miniature games, LARPs (Living Action Role Playing), CCGs (collectible card games), family games and anything else in between.
To get in free, you need to volunteer to run at least 3 session or the equivalent hours (12) of games.
