2017 Q1 State of JustUs

Communication has been brought up in recent conversations, so I decided to start a new tradition of quarterly news posts about the state of JustUs, at least from my perspective.  Jeff may have more to add to this as he works on his own separate projects each year.  For now, this is where things stand.

2o16 was an up and down year for JustUs, with many successes as well as failures.  MACE East stands out as the biggest disappointment about 2016 and we are sad that we can not return.  At the same time, we celebrated our 20th year with MACE, which in this business is an accomplishment.  We could not have done it without our loyal attendees, GMs, dealers and volunteers.  Thanks for an overall great year.

In this business, however, we don’t tend to look to the past, instead we keep looking forward.  2017 has a whole slate of events for us to deal with.  First off, the return of mini-mace is just around the corner, January 28.  For those unfamiliar, mini-mace is a game day started back in 2003 as an idea between Jeff and I to get a little more MACE style gaming in for just a day.  Up until 2013, mini-mace was held at a restaurant like the Golden Corral.  Because of rising prices at these type of venues, we chose to move it to its current location in Kernersville at Jeff’s church.  It’s a great place to have fun and the congregation of Bunker Hill are very generous to allow us to use it.  At these events, it is a lot more casual.   No gaming registration, no gaming posters, just find a game and sit down.  We do have a schedule, but there tends to be a lot of pick up as well.

Following this, we will be heading full speed ahead with MACE West in Asheville, March 24-26.  This will be the 7th year of MACE West and the 4th year we have been in Asheville.   I can’t say enough about the gaming community and how well they have welcomed us to their town.  We continue to work hard to bring you some of the best games that JustUs can provide and 2017 is no different.  The game scheduling has already started and soon I expect to have a full schedule.  We always have a blast at MACE West and I look forward to it every year as much as I do MACE.

Already planned for MACE West is more Warmachine and Hordes as well as Pathfinder and D&D Adventurers League.  Savage Saturday Night is also returning.  The one new thing that we are working on is a potential regional tournament for the Settlers of Catan Championship held at Origins.  The winner will get a trip to Origins (travel paid for by JustUs and the rest handled by Catan Studios, as I understand.)  Details are still being worked out, so don’t hold me to those details.

After a short needed break, the summer convention season starts.  JustUs jumps right into it with the sci-fi fandom convention ConCarolinas, one of our client events.  A client event is one that is not a MACE event and is run by someone else.  In this case, ConCarolinas is run by a committee of people as a not-for-profit company.  We run their tabletop gaming and ONLY their tabletop gaming.  This year, ConCarolinas is moving to their old location which just so happens to be the same hotel that hosts MACE – the Charlotte University Place Hilton.  ConCarolinas is June 2-4, 2017 and we expect to have a full slate of games for that event.  Stay tuned through our website, Facebook, Twitter, or email for updates on ConCarolinas.  PFS, D&D Adventurers League, Savage Worlds and Malifaux are all planned events for ConCarolinas.

Almost immediately after ConCarolinas will be Club MACE, the cruise that Jeff and his friends at Outlander Travel plan for those that can attend.   Club MACE is July 2 through 8, 2017 on Carnival Cruise Lines going to Nassau, Grand Turks and Amber Cove, Dominican Repulic.  Club MACE is quite a unique experience and I highly recommend trying it out if you can afford it.  It’s so much fun to go on some great adventures with some great gaming friends and share amazing experiences with them outside of a gaming convention environment.

Immediately after Club MACE, JustUs Productions is slated to run gaming at another sci-fi fandom client event called ConGregate in High Point, July 14 through 16.  We are currently revisiting our approach to that convention so stay tuned for that information. After our summer convention season, planning for the 21st annual MACE gaming convention (November 10 – 12, 2017) begins in August.  More on that soon.

I will try to have the next State of JustUs out in March or April.
