What is Quest Givers?

Quest Givers is a collaboration between two artists and writers. Creating monthly tabletop roleplaying game adventure modules and tools that work in almost any tabletop role-playing game system.  Their focus is on building educational content around our series of modules and RPG tools to enhance the games people play.
Ultimately they want Quest Givers to become a community of creative people creating quality, useful content and tools for the tabletop RPG community at large.
Quest Givers releases a new campaign module on the first of each month and releases other products like Quick Quests and RPG Tools and additional content through their mailing list and our web store.

Who is Quest Givers?

Scotty McFarland (DM Scotty)

Scotty has a passion for tabletop terrain. In 2012 he got back into tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and found that his players and he were not happy with simple grid maps and wanted something more visually appealing. Running through the expensive and hard to play on options he became obsessed with bringing a better experience for his players.

He made a list of criteria. Quick and easy to make, but still visually appealing to game on. Full access to the layouts for players sitting around a table, and cheap materials that did not break the bank. Over several years since then he pioneered 3 distinct systems to game on. His original “2.5D”, “2.5D NEXT”, and the current iteration “DM Scotty’s Tilescapes”. He has hundreds of videos on YouTube at TheDMsCraft.

Gareth Q Barrett (TheDMGinfo)

Inspired by Scotty’s work on “TheDMsCraft” channel, Gareth started his own channel “TheDMGinfo” in 2013. In 2015, he began releasing videos for his first published module “Under the Tavern”. The series was the first full video walkthrough of a dungeon module to appear on YouTube. Sales of the PDF and DVD versions were enormously successful and still continue.

His thesis for his Masters degree in Narrative Film Theory and Practice was on “Universal Narrative Structure” and looked at the narrative structure of role-playing games, computer games and televised sport in relation to film theory.

ConCarolinas 2019: H.E.R.O Card Game Official Demos

Gaming at ConCarolinas 2019 will feature official demos of a newly independent card game called H.E.R.O by G. Wesley Cone, the game’s designer.  Mr. Cone will be at the con the entire weekend demoing his game.  Please stop by his table in Glenwaters to learn about his game.  Please see our gaming schedule through OGRe.  You must be registered for the convention to register for games.

From Wesley

H.E.R.O. will be set up in the Gaming room at ConCarolinas (Saturday and Sunday–June 1 & 2) for those interested in following an origin story.

How will you build your force? One buff boss-like hero or a rag-tag team of fighters who operate like a well built “engine?” What sacrifices are you willing to make?

H. eal (fatigued heroes),
E. nhance (boost their power and teach them new abilities)
R. ecruit a team (Or not…)
O. ffense (Defeat opposing heroes and their SkyBase[s])

The game mechanics are fleshed out, and art is in the wings. We are almost ready for KickStarter. Looking for people to demo with us.

My name is Wesley Cone, and I am the creator of H.E.R.O. Some of you may remember me from MACE last year. Well, I’m alive and kicking.

About HERO Card Game

HERO CARD GAME

An Expandable Card Game (ECG)

H.E.R.O. is an Expandable Card Game, meaning that the initial game contains the full game at purchase. H.E.R.O. comes with two enhancement decks, 21 recruitable heroes, and 24 abilities to draft from when building your personal enhancement deck.H.E.R.O. is a game for all levels of gamers ages 10+. H.E.R.O is simple to learn, at 1 page of instructions, but requires much deeper thinking to master.

Know yourself; know your opponent.

H.E.R.O. has been likened to many other games including Naruto, MTG, Smash-Up, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.

While baring similarities to each, the mechanics are a unique combination of drafting, recruitable heroes, recovery of fatigued/injured heroes, building a strong hand of cards, simple stat boosting, heroes that learn new abilities, various phase options for every turn, direct attacks, combined attacks, and of course–ability combinations.

ConCarolinas 2019: Gaming Tips #5 – 8

#5. Schedule Posters

We are ONLY HUMAN!

We have schedule posters that initially reflect the state of preregistration at the time of printing (Print Date, as displayed on the corner).  If time allows, the gaming staff will attempt to update them with stickers to reflect the progress.  Unfortunately we are only human and it won’t always be 100% accurate.  Online registration is open throughout the weekend.  People use it all the time.  We try our best to keep up with it, but it’s a lot to handle.  Check OGRe for the most accurate account of what games still have seats and what games don’t.

#6. How can I sign up online at the con?  Onsite Activation

When we decided to keep online registration open throughout our events – we used to close it at a specific date to get printing done and handle the rest onsite – the hardest aspect of it was the limitation of activation.  Online registration allowed for an easy mechanism for activation.  On-site is a little harder.  There is all kinds of code we could write to make some fancy functionality but we are just volunteering our time here, so it’s not like we have all the time in the work to do things like that between family, real jobs and life, right?

Onsite activation can happen simply by emailing or texting the Gaming Coordinator (me, Ron) and he will get to it as soon as he can.  Until we come up with a better solution, that’s the best we can do at this point.

#7. Open Gaming Space?  Pick-Up Games?

Have a game you just want to sit down and play?  Have a group of players and want to run a wick D&D game?  Do we have open gaming space? At ConCarolinas, that’s a complicated question, mostly because we have limited space.  Because of that, I can’t allocate open gaming space.  But that does not mean you can’t find an open table.  It just means you can’t find a table and park all day there.

On every table should be a tri-fold table tent sign.  On that sign should be two sides with the con logo and the table number.  On the third side is the schedule for that particular table.  You can have that table is it’s not being used at that time and you can get up from that table before the next game needs it.  See an example of an unfolded table sign below.

So look for the table sign and read the schedule before sitting down to play a game.  We HATE having one of our scheduled GMs come up and say “Hey!  Someone took my table!!”  and then have to deal with the unfortunate and awkward situation where we have to kick you off the table.

At ConCarolinas 2019, we will have at least two tables allocated to open gaming, however, those will be primarily reserved for Play to Win.

#8 Do I have to pay for a con badge to play?

Simple Answer:  Yes.  YOU MUST be registered for the convention to play in any of our games.  GMs are asked to check for badges when they start playing. YOU MUST HAVE A BADGE or you will be asked to leave.

ConCarolinas 2019: Gaming Tips #1 – 4

#1. Read!

A person will not always be at the gaming registration table. It’s only me and I have games to run as well. When nobody’s there, I will leave signs. Read those.  Also the schedule posters aren’t that complicated. They may seem like it but I will have instructions on how to use them to sign up for games, if you need to. Some games don’t need to be signed up for. Pay close attention to the dots.

#2: Print your tickets/schedule

Log in to OGRe and click on the table that says Downloads. Use the Drop downs there to get the respective files downloaded.

#3: NOG Games

No Ordinary Gamers will be demoing a variety of games in the Glenwaters room – from Steve Jackson Games to CoolMinisOr Not. They will be designated with the dot shown below.

You want to look for the guy in the picture, he is James Doster (shown below). These games mean they are scheduled demos but if you can’t make the game scheduled or it is full when you go to the table, then he may have another copy or would be willing to schedule another one at your convenience.

James Doster

Either way, no sign up onsite is necessary for these games. You just need to show up and ask for James. If he’s not available, one of his helpers will be there.

#4: Organized Play Games

Organized Play Games include Pathfinder Society/Starfinder Society, D&D Adventurers League, and Shadowrun Missions. They are continuous RPG campaigns organized by the publisher and run by volunteers that love the game. Most people that play these games have their own character that they bring from one event to another. They also primarily register online. It is recommended you have a character for these games. You can find information about creating characters for those types of games here…

https://www.justusproductions.com/organized-play-resources/

I will have a limited amount of pre-gens characters available at registration.

To Sign up for these games onsite, I recommend you sign up online or find the coordinator for each of the area of organized play.

Coordinators for PFS/SFS is Murky Maggie “Moo” Keeble (shown) and Nathan Littlefield.

Coordinator for D&D AL is Bill Boivin (shown)

Coordinator for Shadowrun Missions is Mac McFarland (shown)

To sign up onsite, if you can not do it online, just find these people and they will find you a table to play in their respective games.

ConCarolinas Game Master Instructions

This post is for anyone that is in some fashion or another, involved in volunteering or running events at a JustUs client event – ConCarolinas.   If you are not involved in running games, volunteering for either game registration or game library or something along those lines, this information does not apply to you.  Much of this information applies to both Organized Play (PFS, D&D AL, SRM) and regular gaming GMs, so please read!

Registering for the con

If you are a GM (and your games are on the schedule) or a volunteer (and you have been a assigned a volunteer schedule), you are registered for the con.  See GM check-in/Badges on how to pick up you badge.

Check your OGRe Schedule

If you have not already, please be sure to check out OGRe for your schedule.  Go to http://ogre.justusproductions.com and log in there.  If you are a GM, you have an account ( either you made it or I made it for you) and it is activated.  Volunteer Schedules will also appear on the OGRe schedule by clicking the My Schedule button.

It would be advisable to print your schedule as well as your player list.  The closer to the convention you can print these, the more accurate they will be as change will happen all the way up to the convention and during.  Use the Download tab to download these PDFs

GM Check-in/Badges

For ConCarolinas, things may be a little different from our MACE events.  Badges may be obtained in multiple ways, depending on role with the convention.  If your role with the con is more than just gaming, then I suggest you follow the instructions provided by the Con Committee to obtain your badge – this includes guests, dealers, and staff.

All GMs must check-in with Gaming Registration as soon as you get in.  You will sign in and pick up your badge at Gaming Registration.  Follow the signs for Gaming Registration.  It’s usually the first thing you see.  We will need to know your name and the fact that you are a GM.  So approaching the table saying “I am a GM and I would like my badge please” is an ideal start to our conversation :-).  And be sure to say that with a smile 🙂

The badges will have your GM schedule on the back.  Changes to your schedule made during the week before the con will not be reflected because I need at least a week to print and ready everything.

Game Registration Tickets

WE NO LONG PRE-PRINT THE TICKETS!  PLEASE PRINT OR DOWNLOAD YOUR OWN!

We use a game pre-registration tickets system.  Players can print out their tickets online.  We no longer pre-print the tickets to pick them up.  These basically represent your reservation for a seat at a particular game you are registered to play.  All players will have tickets as well.

As a GM for a game, you have three requirements…

  •  Do not allow a player sit at your table without a current Convention event badge.  I will be walking through every session in each room doing badge checks.  Please help us be as diligent as possible about this.
  • Always give ticket holding players the priority.  This rule can be overridden by the gaming coordinator or the organized play coordinator.
  •  GMs should allow 5 to 10 minutes for people to show up, however.  If players that registered don’t show up in that allotted time, you are allowed to give the seats to anyone else.  Ticket holding alternates get the priority.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for running games for us and for all your hard work in that effort.  I look forward to seeing you at our next event.

Game Blurb

The System is Dresden Files Fate Accelerated. This is a continuation of a local Greensboro LARP. Magic is real. Some people whisper that beat cop is a werewolf. And everyone knows the vigilante Cypher is a vampire. Life in Gate City has always been complicated, and when you move there… you may not want to leave. DFA: Gate City is a Live-Action Roleplay set in the world of Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden novels. We use the Dresden Files Accelerated rule set, a lightweight and narrative version of FATE that is both easy to learn and very flexible. Set in a fictionalized version of Greensboro, the game meets twice monthly. Dresden Files @ ConCarolinas! Flocks of sparrows have fallen from the sky. Packs of stray dogs congregate in Freedom and howl at the moon. And those who can touch the actual forces of magic know something is coming. Become one of the Fae courts, a vampire, a wizard, or a mortal in the know. Find out what’s coming. Save the day. Be the hero you know you are!
