MACE 2021

November 12-14, 2021

Hilton Charlotte University Place

Charlotte, NC

MACE (Mid Atlantic Convention Expo) is a table top gaming convention, once held in High Point, NC since 1997 and now held in Charlotte since 2012. The previous incarnation called ROC 96.5 was a gaming event associated to Roc Of Ages Con in Charlotte. Since then, it has grown to be one of the largest gatherings of gamers in the Carolinas. We at Justus Productions/MACE pride ourselves in providing the best and most variety of games in the Carolinas. Supported by one of the largest online Carolina game master pool, as well as many Carolina organized play RPG groups (RPGA, PFS, SRM, D&D AL) and local LARP groups like Underground Theater, Ivanhoe Productions, VampCat, and others, MACE has everything for the avid gamer. Board games, war games, role playing games, live action, video games, and miniature games – there is something for everyone.

We encourage our attendees to always try to play something new during our weekend. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask the organizers. We are here for you, the gamer. We rarely have guests, and we rarely have panels. However, we have had a few names in the industry stop by and game with us like Steve Long, Shane Hensley and Greg Porter. Please feel free to browse our site and see what we are all about.

MACE (in all its forms) is dedicated to providing the highest quality games and related activities to you,the gamer. We have access to hundreds of GMs, Judges, tournament directors, and event coordinators that present some of the best gaming the Carolinas have to offer. Our gaming include indie RPGs, Organized Play RPG gaming, war gaming, board games, miniature games, and live action games. In one weekend, we have the most concentrated, and focused amount of gaming you will find in the Carolinas.

Child Policy

Children under 8 get in free. Ages 8 to 11 get in with a discount. See Registration for exact prices. All children under 18 must be accompanied to the event by a parent. MACE and JustUs Productions are not responsible for any child under 18 unaccompanied.

All our games have an manufacturer’s age recommendation.  The parent should make an effort inform themselves of those recommendations for each game they sign a child up for. Our policy is unless the game is specifically geared for kids, it is marked with a minimum rating of PG, meaning parental guidance suggested.  Part of that guidance is being informed of what games you are signing your child up for.  If your child is under the recommended age, we encourage the parent to be present at the game session in question.

Food Policy

MACE encourages its attendees to take advantage of the Grinning Goblin table side service all weekend. They have a wide variety of snacks, drinks and ordered food. However, MACE and JustUs Productions discourages attendees from bringing in outside meals and drinks, as it is against our agreement with the hotel.

Refund Policy

If you pre-registered through PayPal, MACE will refund through PayPal, and are at the mercy of PayPal policies. Other refunds will have to be arranged by contacting Registration. (see Justus ProductionsContact Us).

Tips on running a convention game

MACE uses the gaming schedule system called OGRe (Online Gaming Registration) to allow you see what is scheduled, sign up for what is scheduled and also get an idea of what kinds of games will be there for pick up. However do not let that fool you. We also have a room dedicated to pick up board and card games and have a extensive game library for you to choose from.

MACE (and it other weekend-long incarnations) traditionally has a modest dealers room with a limited number of select dealers. Vendors are selected at the discretion of the Con Manager, Jeff Smith. If you would like to be a vendor in our dealers room, contact ┬áto reserve space in our dealers room. The Dealer’s Spaces at MACE events are free if you bring your own tables. The spaces are generally 6′ x 6′. If tables need to be provided, there will be a fee involved. The current cost of a table is $60 per table. When applying for a dealer space, please include the following:

  1. Which Convention you are requesting space for (MACE, MACE West, etc)
  2. Your Business Name
  3. Your First and Last Name with email address and phone number we can reach you at.

What is MACE?

MACE stands for Mid-Atlantic Convention Expo. MACE is a gaming convention (and is developing into a series of gaming conventions). Our gaming includes role playing, board games, card games, war games, miniature games, video games, and live action games of all kinds. Our focus is more on the face to face social games than video or computer games, but some years we do have some computer games for those that want to play those.

We have a game schedule for those games that need scheduling and sign up, but we also have space for pick up and open gaming. We welcome all kinds. We also like to have something unique each year so please watch our features as we add things throughout the year.

What is a Gaming Con?

A tabletop gaming convention is a gathering centered around role-playing games, collectible card games, miniatures wargames, board games, video games, or other types of games. These conventions are typically two or three days long, and often held at either a university or in a convention center hotel. The largest gaming convention, Spiel, is a trade fair held in Essen, Germany that focuses on German-style board games and RPGs. Gen Con is the largest tabletop gaming con in the US for RPGs, with 20,000 attendees over four days, while Origins is the largest tabletop gaming convention focused on miniatures, wargames, and live-action role playing games.

Tabletop gaming conventions primarily differ from other fandom conventions in that they focus primarily on games and the tabletop gaming industry, with very little else. MACE prides itself in being one of the most focused weekends of pure tabletop gaming there is. We have very little programming other than tabletop gaming, we do not have guests (in the traditional sense), we do not have any other events other than the charity auction. If you come to MACE, plan to game and game a lot.

How much does it cost?

See our Register for that information

Are there rates at the door?

Are there daily rates?

. . . Other aspects of fandom might include Anime, Cosplay, Costume Contests, Sci-fi or fantasy writers. etc.

MACE’s focus is tabletop gaming, 100%.  We work very hard to to present to our attendees/customers the best tabletop gaming experience we can present.  If other fans of other areas want to attend and celebrate their fandom in these other areas, they are welcome to.  We just do not allocate space to anything else other than tabletop gaming.

MACE prides itself at being family friendly.  Not all aspects of fandom are family friendly.  If you wish to bring another aspect of fandom to MACE, please keep it family friendly.

Where do I go to sign up for games?

Do I have to have experience to play any of these games?

We always welcome new gamers and we encourage our GMs to be prepared for new players. They should alway be ready to teach their game. For Organized Play RPGs, however, we recommend contacting the coordinator before you try them.

I registered. Do I get tickets or something in the mail?

We do not send out tickets or anything like that. If you paid online, your receipt from PayPal is your confirmation. We do not send out personalized confirmations. You pick up your badge at the con registration desk, if you paid. GMs can pick up their badge at gaming registration. If you paid, but are running games, you may have to check both.

How much does it cost to play each game?

At this time, we do not have a pay to play system. So there is nothing holding you to the schedule you sign up for. We ask that you please hold to your schedule as best you can, as GMs work very hard on their games and are disappointed when players are no-shows. If this becomes a problems, this policy may change.

What is all this stuff about Organized Play, D&D Adventurers League (D&D AL),  Pathfinder Society (PFS), Shadowrun Missions (SRM) etc?

At MACE (and most other cons), we have two distinct areas of interest for tabletop role playing gaming – general play/one-shots and Organized Play PFS, D&D AL, and SRM (and others like them) are Organized Play style RPGs. Most of these games are associated to a specific campaign setting, require you to make and bring your own character and allow you to go from con to con, event to event, participating in various adventures, and advancing your character through the campaign.

On the other hand, general play, open play or one-shots tabletop RPGs should always have have pre-generated characters.  You simply sign up through OGRe.  When the seats fill up for that table, they are full.  GMs have a limited number of characters.

Who do I contact at Justus Productions if I have any business related questions about Justus, it’s events, or inquire about running gaming at my event, etc?

Contact Event/Con Manager, Jeff Smith

Charlotte and Mecklenburg County now have a new mask mandate. Masks must be worn inside all buildings. This took place last week.

So for MACE 2021, we will be following that rule as well.

We will have Hand Sanitizer out for folks to use and we will be distancing the tables as much as possible. We want everyone to have fun, but we do want to work together to keep everyone safe.
