MACE 2019: Emberbright, the official campaign of MACE!

At MACE 2019, Matt Holmquist once again returns with the Living MACE campaign contest winner – Emberbright!  What is Emberbright.  A few years ago, we conducted a contest between some of the best GMs to create a world that MACE can call its own.  Matt was the final winner and his world, Emberbright represents a collection of ideas from those in the contest.

Matt is continuing the development the setting that will act as our the  living MACE campaign setting. That means you can create a character for it at one event and play that character at other JustUs Productions events that host this living campaign.  Matt will be running his adventures in D&D 5e.

Emberbright S4-A1 Revelation in Ice: Something Wicked This Way Thaws

This adventure is designed for 6 level 10 characters. The Fort Monastary of Bastion has begun to slowly expand in response to the lul in the Icemen advance. Their first outpost has gone silent and they want to know why and if this is a sign that the Icemen are once again on the offensive. You have been hired to get some answers and bring word back.

Emberbright is a bleak fantasy world where humanity struggles as the subjugated species after a cataclysm of divine proportions.

A millennia ago, humankind nearly destroyed the world – an event later named the Unraveling. The greatest kingdoms lay to waste, and the largest race reduced to nomads. Those that did not devolve into tribal cults in the north, eeked out existence as servants to the Elf Mageocracy or as second rate members of the Ignis Combine. (Igni – goblinoid fire-elemental race). The gods, once protectors of man and their greatest strength, have gone silent. Lorekeepers of the remaining human settlements still espouse that faith will restore humanity to its previous glory. What few baronies managed to survive have started to form alliances. A rudimentary collection of city-states has laid the groundwork for the rise of the next great human kingdom. The balance of power may shift again. The Wizard Lords have enjoyed their time as the most powerful beings, and the Ignis Leaders would not give up their monopoly on trade and steam tech. What of the Icemen to the north… no one knows what agenda their seemingly random raids hold. The great cycle of the heavens nears another completion. What will the next thousand years hold? What part will you play in it?

Character Creation Guidelines

Here are are guidelines for creating your own characters for the Emberbright Living Campaign D&D 5e adventures. First, a reminder that this is a trial of home-brew characters so the rules may change between conventions and characters made during these beta phases may not be cannon after we finalize the rules. So please do not get too attached to these first characters.

  1. Characters will be made using the 27 point buy method. Normal restrictions in the Players Handbook apply.
  2. You must take the Class/Background packages for starting equipment. No Substitutions at this time.
  3.  The races currently allowed are Human (and the variant Human), Elf (High and Wood elves only), Igni (Rules here), Forged (Rules here) and Dwarves.
  4.  All classes in the Players Handbook are allowed at this time.
  5. All characters will need to be emailed to me by Nov. 1st. Once submitted and approved no changes will be allowed. Email them to me at matt.holmquist (AT) gmail.com with the subject Emberbright Character Submission and once I look it over I will reply with approved or any corrections needed questions/clarifications.

If you have any questions please feel free to email Matt with Emberbright in the subject and he will reply as quickly as I can and if needed I will update this with corrections and adjustments.

S1-1 Oracle’s Bright Secret

Since the rediscovery of Oracle Isle, Central has become a hive of activity. The Grand Duke of Central has made a bold move to try and bring Humans back into the forefront of the world. He has declared a reward for any human cultural artifacts recovered from the isle. This has generated a swarm of adventures pouring in looking for a way to better their lives and station. Being a savvy diplomat, Duke John Vertagk has also asked the Elven Mageocracy and the Igni Technoarchy to join them in this endeavor.

S1-2 The Heat of Hope`s Endurance

The party has just recovered the Emberbright of Azerus and fallen into a deep oubliette. They must now find their way back to civilization

S1-3 Justice Rises as Hope is Lost

The party finds themselves on a brand new continent after disembarking an Igni merchant ship. They now must follow the pull of the Emberbright they have found to the next one.

MACE West 2018: Savage Kingdoms, Reforged, with game creator Mike Yow

Mike Yow will be joining us at MACE West 2018 to run his fantasy RPG, Savage Kingdoms.  Hew will be running not only his new Savage Kingdoms, Reforged (recently Kickstarted)  but also his D&D 5th edition version.

The Blood Crown

In the winter-kingdom of Mulovia, life and death are separated by the thinnest of veils and the acquisition of power is only secondary to survival. Noble houses squabble with each other, often openly, while King Vortimir grins darkly from his throne. But rumors now surface that the once-hidden tomb of the First King of Mulovia has been discovered, along with the possible burial-place of his most prized possession – the Blood Crown. “Through water, stone, and iron one must pass” say the gypsy-seers. The Blood Crown uses the ‘Savage Kingdoms: Reforged’ heroic sword-and-sorcery RPG system and its grim and gritty setting, which utilizes by a single d20 roll for all narrative action resolutions. Local Asheville actor and dabbling game designer, Mike Yow, is the game’s author and will serve as Game Master for the event.

Shadows In The Sand

In the deep desert, no one can hear you scream. Zaramahd, the great Eastern empire, is predominated by the Sea of Sand. Here, desert tribes loyal and non-loyal to Emperor Al-Shadar’s vast realm dwell, and worse still, endless dunes and a siroccos plague the expansive wastes separating the great bejeweled cities. It is somewhere in this no-man’s land where you awakne, hearing little more than the trotting of sand-muffled feet and the terrible jangle of chains. In your blurred vision, a masked face glances at you, but you are unsure as to just who – or what – it is. Or how many. Shadows In The Sand uses the Savage Kingdoms grim and gritty setting, but via the D&D 5e rules system. This is a playtest of some of the new races, classes, and other materials that might see publication at some future date. It is designed by Mike Yow, local Asheville actor and author of the ‘Savage Kingdoms: Reforged’ heroic sword-and-sorcery RPG.

Sea of Ghosts

Just north of Tyrius, great city of the southern-most province of the Lorinthian Empire, an ancient temple has been unearthed. Several local noble families claim this area as ancestral land, but none know for certain. After further excavation and political scheming, a band of heroes are hired to explore the subterranean structure and report on what it is discovered. But mysterious and ancient sorceries may lie in waiting, and what was once an underground quest could soon lead to an epic voyage across the sea. Sea of Ghosts will utilize either the Savage Kingdoms: Reforged heroic sword-and-sorcery RPG rules OR the D&D 5e rules set, depending on majority player vote. Local Asheville actor Mike Yow is the creator and author of the Savage Kingdoms game system and setting (this setting will also be used if the 5e rules are elected).


About Savage Kingdoms

Savage Kingdoms is the brain child of Mike Yow, a long-time RPGer, dabbling game designer, and professional actor. First published in 2014, Savage Kingdoms: Reforged – this current project – is a full-color reimagining of not only the core rulebook, but the entire game line to come. In addition to full interior color and more artwork, the rules system has been tweaked and tightened up a bit, though perhaps not quite enough to warrant the moniker of “2nd Edition”.

JustUs Productions and the publishers of Adventures in Filbar are working together to run as many of their adventures as possible at all our events.  We are seeking D&D 5e DMs willing to run any of the adventures they have available on DriveThruRPG.  The adventures will be provided.  Free swag will be included.  A usual package is the adventure(s), pre-gens, swag bags for the players, dice/dice bag for the DM.  This includes MACE West 2018.  The more we run, the more swag we get.  If you are interested in running these adventures, please contact the gaming coordinator.
