ConCarolinas 2019: Gaming Tips #5 – 8

#5. Schedule Posters

We are ONLY HUMAN!

We have schedule posters that initially reflect the state of preregistration at the time of printing (Print Date, as displayed on the corner).  If time allows, the gaming staff will attempt to update them with stickers to reflect the progress.  Unfortunately we are only human and it won’t always be 100% accurate.  Online registration is open throughout the weekend.  People use it all the time.  We try our best to keep up with it, but it’s a lot to handle.  Check OGRe for the most accurate account of what games still have seats and what games don’t.

#6. How can I sign up online at the con?  Onsite Activation

When we decided to keep online registration open throughout our events – we used to close it at a specific date to get printing done and handle the rest onsite – the hardest aspect of it was the limitation of activation.  Online registration allowed for an easy mechanism for activation.  On-site is a little harder.  There is all kinds of code we could write to make some fancy functionality but we are just volunteering our time here, so it’s not like we have all the time in the work to do things like that between family, real jobs and life, right?

Onsite activation can happen simply by emailing or texting the Gaming Coordinator (me, Ron) and he will get to it as soon as he can.  Until we come up with a better solution, that’s the best we can do at this point.

#7. Open Gaming Space?  Pick-Up Games?

Have a game you just want to sit down and play?  Have a group of players and want to run a wick D&D game?  Do we have open gaming space? At ConCarolinas, that’s a complicated question, mostly because we have limited space.  Because of that, I can’t allocate open gaming space.  But that does not mean you can’t find an open table.  It just means you can’t find a table and park all day there.

On every table should be a tri-fold table tent sign.  On that sign should be two sides with the con logo and the table number.  On the third side is the schedule for that particular table.  You can have that table is it’s not being used at that time and you can get up from that table before the next game needs it.  See an example of an unfolded table sign below.

So look for the table sign and read the schedule before sitting down to play a game.  We HATE having one of our scheduled GMs come up and say “Hey!  Someone took my table!!”  and then have to deal with the unfortunate and awkward situation where we have to kick you off the table.

At ConCarolinas 2019, we will have at least two tables allocated to open gaming, however, those will be primarily reserved for Play to Win.

#8 Do I have to pay for a con badge to play?

Simple Answer:  Yes.  YOU MUST be registered for the convention to play in any of our games.  GMs are asked to check for badges when they start playing. YOU MUST HAVE A BADGE or you will be asked to leave.

ConCarolinas 2019: Gaming Tips #1 – 4

#1. Read!

A person will not always be at the gaming registration table. It’s only me and I have games to run as well. When nobody’s there, I will leave signs. Read those.  Also the schedule posters aren’t that complicated. They may seem like it but I will have instructions on how to use them to sign up for games, if you need to. Some games don’t need to be signed up for. Pay close attention to the dots.

#2: Print your tickets/schedule

Log in to OGRe and click on the table that says Downloads. Use the Drop downs there to get the respective files downloaded.

#3: NOG Games

No Ordinary Gamers will be demoing a variety of games in the Glenwaters room – from Steve Jackson Games to CoolMinisOr Not. They will be designated with the dot shown below.

You want to look for the guy in the picture, he is James Doster (shown below). These games mean they are scheduled demos but if you can’t make the game scheduled or it is full when you go to the table, then he may have another copy or would be willing to schedule another one at your convenience.

Either way, no sign up onsite is necessary for these games. You just need to show up and ask for James. If he’s not available, one of his helpers will be there.

#4: Organized Play Games

Organized Play Games include Pathfinder Society/Starfinder Society, D&D Adventurers League, and Shadowrun Missions. They are continuous RPG campaigns organized by the publisher and run by volunteers that love the game. Most people that play these games have their own character that they bring from one event to another. They also primarily register online. It is recommended you have a character for these games. You can find information about creating characters for those types of games here…

https://www.justusproductions.com/organized-play-resources/

I will have a limited amount of pre-gens characters available at registration.

To Sign up for these games onsite, I recommend you sign up online or find the coordinator for each of the area of organized play.

Coordinators for PFS/SFS is Murky Maggie “Moo” Keeble (shown) and Nathan Littlefield.

Coordinator for D&D AL is Bill Boivin (shown)

Coordinator for Shadowrun Missions is Mac McFarland (shown)

To sign up onsite, if you can not do it online, just find these people and they will find you a table to play in their respective games.
